Description: From tuber or seed, dahlias are a fun (albeit addictive) addition to your garden. This demonstration will give you a quick tour of the dahlia forms and then we’ll dive into the growing process. We’ll discuss growing dahlias from tubers and from seed covering the requirements for planting, care and feeding of these fast-growing fall blooming beauties.
This event is open to the public and is sponsored by a grant from the Shirley Cultural Council, which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
About the presenter: Gayle Joseph is an “award winning” dahlia grower who was introduced to dahlias by her father about 60 years ago. As a child she would help her dad lift the tuber clumps in the fall and help plant in the spring. She would be so excited seeing those first sprouts, leaves, buds and flowers every year and that hasn’t changed over time. She has been growing dahlias on the roadside in front of her house for many years and was approached by a note in her mailbox to become a founding member of the New England Dahlia Society and shortly after became President for a couple of years. She continues to grow 70-100 varieties of dahlias at her home and helps plant and tend the Yankee Dahlia Society display garden at the Nashoba Valley Winery. When not out in the barn or garden you will find her taking care of her twin grandsons, timing ski races, playing music in various music groups in the area or puttering in her art studio.
