10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Where

Hazen Memorial Library
3 Keady Way, Shirley, MA, 01464

Event Type

For our September meeting, we’re back at the Hazen Memorial Library for a special presentation and our annual fall plant swap. As always, light refreshments will be coordinated by Lela and provided by our much-appreciated group of volunteers.

There is a $5 charge for non-members attending this meeting.

Please park across the street from the library on the circular driveway in front of the school. That’s where we’ll hold the plant swap following the meeting – so leave your plants in the car.

Presentation

Master Gardener Bonnie Power will explain how to encourage the “good” and discourage the “bad” insects that are attracted to our gardens with her presentation, “Good Bugs and Bad Bugs: What Every Gardener Should Know.” Bonnie will discuss many of the most common garden pests and the beneficial insects and other arthropods that help our gardens thrive. She will also provide a number of handouts, including a graphic of beneficial and pest insects.

Presenter Bio

Bonnie has an MA in Zoology from Boston University and taught college level science courses for over twelve years before leaving teaching for industry. After she retired, she began taking courses to augment her love of gardening and became a certified Master Gardener in 2016. In 2015 she began volunteering on a Facebook page for insect identification and started to appreciate the important role they play (both “good” and “bad”) in the garden ecosystem.

Fall Plant Swap

Our fall plant swap will be held following the presentation. So plan your fall garden cleanup and redesign with this event in mind. Bring your extras, divisions and orphan plants and swap for new varieties. Please park across the street from the library on the circular driveway in front of the school. That’s where we will be conducting the plant swap following the meeting – so you can leave your plants in the car until then.
